Andel Consultants was established in 1983 by a professional who had worked in various development projects as a United Nations employee during the previous decade. The company has been kept small on purpose so that the owner can continue to work in the technical fields rather than becoming an administrator. Larger projects have generally been undertaken in cooperation with or as subcontractor to other companies.

Geographically, work has been concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, but assignments have also been in countries in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, South-East Asia and the Pacific. Activities have been carried out for most of the major donor agencies operating in these areas as well as local governments and the private sector. Clients included, for instance, various of the United Nations agencies, the World Bank and the ADB, the technical assistance agencies of the European Union and the governments of the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.

  • Broadly, experience can be grouped into four areas of specialisation.
  • A major part of operations has been in statistics.
  • Economic modelling and planning forms the second stream.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of ongoing projects, on a continuous base, and the evaluation of entire development programmes, has been a third line of activities.
  • The fourth field of operation has always been in the provision of data management and processing solutions through software development.

In order to keep abreast of new developments in methodology and practices, the staff's participation in international forums has always been encouraged. This has led also to contributions in new methodologies in the areas of surveys and national accounts. Furthermore, the work in the information technology field has led to generic software suites that can be adapted easily to the varying conditions in a range of countries. Foremost amongst those is the Price Index Management (PRIMA) system that can be used for the compilation of price and production indices of all kinds.

Over the years, in many countries, professionals have either been trained or otherwise associated with the company. Contacts, and sometimes strong links, have been maintained with a substantial number of those individuals. Several of these have subsequently become successful consultants in their respective fields of specialisation. In recent years, the company has drawn on the experience of some of these professionals in several of its assignments. This has resulted in more dependable operations as the commitment level of such professionals is substantially higher than that of the average employee.
